Types of Dog Shelters
There are two main types of shelters that exist in the United States. The first one is those shelters that euthanize the animals through lethal injection or gas. The other are those that rescue dogs from the kill shelters, take them off the street, or take them from families that give them up in order to find safe and loving homes. If you are not with a rescue group, you will want to utilize the second type of shelter as those do full background checks on the animals, provide updated health checks, perform behavioral assessments, and provide the new families with information and training techniques.

Know Your Dog Shelter
Do a background check on any shelter you plan to adopt from before you bring that pup home. They should do a family profile and provide answers to any questions you have about your new family member. To be shy; ask for references!

Adjustment Period
Bringing home a new dog takes some time to adjust. Since it has been at a scary place, such as a shelter, you will want to allow a couple of weeks for its normal behavior and personality to come out. Introduce it slowly to its new environment and allow it to feel at home. Do not venture out with the dog until after the 2 week period so it can fully understand its place within your family before meeting new people.
